I always suspected that I might be an asshole. Or at least a closet misanthrope. It's not that I don't like people; I just don't like people I don't come into personal contact with. Anonymity breeds animosity. The on-line world has made people mean, IMO. The disconnected nature of on-line communities fosters meanness. It jades a person.

I normally proceed from a position of "assume civility and maturity". I'm often disappointed. Like when my car got keyed down to the metal, just for parking on a public street near my work. There's humanity, right there.

So enough of that happens, and you figure that most everyone is shit, and they can work their way up from there. You wouldn't cause a couple thousand dollars damage to a random guy's property, right? Neither would I. But can really you expect that same courtesy from most of the populace? Apparently not.

I can see where the "anonymity breeds animosity" perspective comes from, but I don't agree with the conclusion that most people are shit unless proven otherwise. Otherwise, we'd be getting keyed and dented and vandalized every day. Nasty people just make a bigger impression when they impose upon your life than the thousands of amiable people who leave you alone. I guess I've been lucky to meet enough people who were helpful to me when they didn't need to be that my perspective is somewhat balanced.

You rely on the good nature of your fellow human and you're going to come up short, I guarantee it.
